People call plumbers to fix plumbing issues in their houses all the time. But one of the major reasons people call a plumber is to fix a blocked drain. When you start to notice that water won’t flow anymore or you begin to perceive a foul smell, then you can be sure that you’re dealing with a blocked drain.

If you’re dealing with a blocked drain, then you may be able to fix it yourself without inviting a plumber over to your house. In this article, you’ll learn how to unblock a badly blocked drain. Read on.

How do you unblock a badly blocked drain

Signs that your drain is clogged

You can determine that your drain is blocked when:

  • The toilet won’t flush
  • Water doesn’t flow as usual in the shower, bathtub, or bathroom sink.
  • There’s a foul smell in the house that you don’t know where it’s coming from
  • The kitchen sink is filled with debris-filled water

How to unclog your drain

Below, you’ll learn the different ways by which you can unclog your drain:

  1. Remove the clog by hand

Sometimes a clog isn’t something difficult to find. Clogs could be so visible that all you need to do is put on a pair of rubber gloves and remove the clog by hand. A wire coat hanger could also be instrumental in removing clogs from the drain.

  1. Use a drain snake

A drain snake can also be referred to as the plumber’s snake. This instrument is a retractable drilling tool that can be used to pick up hardened items. You’ll use the snake’s hand crank to push a metal wire down your drain to break or pull out the clog.

  1. Use a plunger

Plungers can be useful for other things, not just clogged toilets. They can be used for kitchen sinks too. If you’re experiencing a blocked drain, you’ll want to get a cup-style plunger that covers the drain completely and creates a tight seal. Thrust the plunger up and down 6 times and remove the plunger. If water flows then you’ve managed to get rid of the blockage, however, if it doesn’t, you have to repeat the process.

  1. Use a pot of boiling water

If you’ve tried other methods, yet you’re unable to get rid of the blockage, you can use boiling water with a dissolver like soap scum and pour into the drain. Repeat the process until you’ve achieved your aim.

  1. Remove and clean the drain trap

Sometimes, a clog will be stuck in the U-pipe or drain trap which is usually beneath the sink. To clean the drain trap, clear the area and place a bucket beneath the U-pipe in case of any spill-offs. Loosen the nuts on the pipe using a plumber’s wrench. Empty the pipe into the bucket and check for clogs. Remove whatever clog is stuck in there and fix back the U-pipe when you’re done.

  1. Call a plumber

If you’ve exhausted all your options trying to remove a clog in the drain, but they all proved abortive, it’s time to contact a plumber.
